Coping Successfully with Changing Tides and Winds : A Neurosurgeon's Compass

Description

Careers and life can have many twists and turns. The external environment constantly changes and these changes are beyond the control of most of us. Sometimes we have to alter our careers and our goals in order to survive. Change, however, creates opportunities and we must prepare ourselves to be ready to seize opportunities that come our way. Dr. Jack Kushner's story reads like another version of Forrest Gump. He was present when civil rights history was made in the South with Rosa Parks. He grew up and played street football with Bart Starr. He volunteered for surgical service in Vietnam. And he was a doctor in the ER when four little girls, victims of the horrible church bombing, were brought in. He has experienced all of these events and more in his fascinating life in addition to making important changes in his careers throughout his life. He believes that to survive and thrive in life, it is imperative to differentiate yourself to be competitive in today's challenging marketplace. In "Coping Successfully with Changing Tides and Winds," Kushner offers practical advice to anyone facing job loss or changes.

The Cyber Effect: A Pioneering Cyber-Psychologist Explains How Human Behaviour Changes Online

Description

Dr Mary Aiken is the world's leading expert in forensic cyberpsychology -- a discipline that combines psychology, criminology and technology to investigate the intersection between technology and human behaviour. In this, her first book, Aiken has created a starting point for all future conversations about how the Internet is shaping our perception of the world, development and behaviour, societal norms and values, children, safety and security. Covering everything from the impact of screens on the developing child to the explosion of teen sexting, and the acceleration of compulsive and addictive online behaviours (gaming, shopping, pornography), The Cyber Effect also examines the escalation in cyberchondria (self-diagnosis online), cyberstalking and organized crime in the Deep Web. Cyberspace is an environment full of surveillance, but who is looking out for us? Full of surprising statistics and incredible-but-true case studies of the hidden trends that are shaping our culture, this book raises troubling questions about where the digital revolution is taking us. Upending your assumptions about your online life and forever changing the way you think about the technology that you, your friends and your family use, The Cyber Effect offers a fascinating and chilling look at a future we can still do something about.

The Man Who Went Up in Smoke (a Martin Beck Novel, Book 2) download pdf

Maj Sjowall,Per Wahloo,Val McDermid: The Man Who Went Up in Smoke (a Martin Beck Novel, Book 2)

The Man Who Went Up in Smoke (a Martin Beck Novel, Book 2)

Description

The second book in the classic Martin Beck detective series from the 1960s - the novels that shaped the future of Scandinavian crime writing. Hugely acclaimed, the Martin Beck series were the original Scandinavian crime novels and have inspired the writings of Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell and Jo Nesbo. Written in the 1960s, 10 books completed in 10 years, they are the work of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo - a husband and wife team from Sweden. They follow the fortunes of the detective Martin Beck, whose enigmatic, taciturn character has inspired countless other policemen in crime fiction; without his creation Ian Rankin's John Rebus or Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander may never have been conceived. The novels can be read separately, but are best read in chronological order, so the reader can follow the characters' development and get drawn into the series as a whole. 'The Man Who Went Up in Smoke' starts as Martin Beck has just begun his holiday: an August spent with his family on a small island off the coast of Sweden. But when a neighbour gets a phone call, Beck finds himself packed off to Budapest, where a boorish journalist has vanished without a trace. Instead of passing leisurely sun-filled days with his children, Beck must troll about in the Eastern Europe underworld for a man nobody knows, with the aid of the coolly efficient local police, who do business while soaking at the public baths - and at the risk of vanishing along with his quarry.

Description

In 1606, the grand city of Prague hides an ugly secret: the emperor s bastard son, Don Julius, is afflicted with a madness that pushes the prince to unspeakable depravity. Banished to a remote corner of Bohemia, Don Julius comes under the care of a bloodletter who works to purge the vicious humors coursing through the young royal s veins. When the prince meets the bloodletter s daughter Marketa, his madness sparks a frenzied and dangerous obsession. He believes Marketa embodies the women from the Coded Book of Wonder, a priceless manuscript from the imperial library that was the young prince s only link to sanity. As the prince descends further into the darkness of his mind, his acts become ever more desperate, and Marketa, both frightened and fascinated, can t stay away. From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth

Description

In blood-soaked lore handed down the centuries, the vampire is a monster of endless fascination: from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", this seductive lover of blood haunts popular culture and inhabits our darkest imaginings. The history of the vampire is a compelling tale that is now documented in "From Demons to Dracula", which reveals why the vampire myth and this creature of the undead fascinates us. Beresford's chronicle roams from the mountains of Eastern Europe, to the foggy streets of Victorian England, to Hollywood film, as he investigates the portrayal of the vampire in history, literature and art. Investigating the historical "Dracula", "Vlad the Impaler", and his status as a national hero in Romania, Beresford endeavours to winnow out truths from the complex legend and folklore. "From Demons to Dracula" tracks the evolution of the vampire, drawing on classical Greek and Roman myths, witch trials and medieval plagues, Gothic literature and even contemporary works such as Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire and Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian". Beresford also looks at the widespread impact of screen vampires from television shows, classic movies starring Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee, and more recent films such as "Underworld" and "Blade". Whether as a demon of the underworld or a light-fearing hunter of humans, the vampire has endured through the centuries, the book reveals, as a powerful symbolic figure for human concerns with life, death and the afterlife. Wide-ranging and engrossing, "From Demons to Dracula" casts this bloodthirsty nightstalker as a remarkably complex and telling totem of our nightmares, real and imagined.

For teachers, one of the most challenging student reactions to being taught grammar is this: 'I understand how to use this structure, but why do I have to use it?' In this book, George Yule focuses on the grammar topics that give rise to these why-questions. His explanations link form, meaning, and real-life use, and are supported throughout by exercises and discussion points. Following the welcomed re-release of "Big-Top Benn" comes another addition to the immensely popular collection of original Mr Benn adventures by author and illustrator David McKee. Published in 1967 "Mr Benn - Red Knight" was the first Mr Benn book ever written. It introduces the friendly bowler-hatted character who inspired the legendary TV series which made Mr Benn a household name. In this delightful story, Mr Benn finds himself transported into a medieval world where he assists an unfortunate dragon whose role as firelighter to the king is threatened by a greedy matchmaker. McKee's original artwork will entrance children of all ages in From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth download ebook what is sure to become a cult classic for yet another generation of readers.

Ayn Rand: Anthem

Anthem

Description

Hailed by" The" "New York Times "as "a compelling dystopian look at paranoia from one of the most unique and perceptive writers of our time," this brief, captivating novel offers a cautionary tale. The story unfolds within a society in which all traces of individualism have been eliminated from every aspect of life use of the word "I" is a capital offense. The hero, a rebel who discovers that man's greatest moral duty is the pursuit of his own happiness, embodies the values the author embraced in her personal philosophy of objectivism: reason, ethics, volition, and individualism. "Anthem" anticipates the themes Ayn Rand explored in her later masterpieces, "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged. Publisher's Weekly" acclaimed it as "a diamond in the rough, often dwarfed by the superstar company it keeps with the author's more popular work, but every bit as gripping, daring, and powerful." "
